Oral Appliance Therapy Really Works

Sleep Apnea is a disorder that can cause serious health problems. According to oral appliance therapy specialist Dr. Jack Ringer, obstructive sleep apnea, also known as OSA can be deadly.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Dangers

While OSA causes many problems, it also increases high blood pressure or hypertension. OSA could also increase heart attack and stroke risks along with atrial fibrillation and abnormal heartbeats.

Dr. Ringer, who is also the past president an Accredited Fellow with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry is a preferred provider and explains that OSA can also cause the following problems:

  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Loss of Libido
  • Memory Loss
  • Headaches
  • Problems Staying Awake
  • Weight Gain
  • IInsomnia
  • Depression
  • Diabetes
  • Auto Accidents

What is Sleep Apnea?

oral_appliance_therapy_Anaheim_HillsApnea is a Greek word that means, “Without Breath.” OSA causes the sufferer to stop breathing while sleeping. Sometimes people can wake up hundreds of times every night because they can’t breathe. Most of the time the person with OSA is unaware because the episodes are so short.

Who is at Risk for OSA?

Your specialist in Anaheim Hills explains that sleep apnea is more common in men than women, particularly in Hispanic and African American men. Symptoms include loud snoring, which is often so loud that it wakes up the entire household. While sleep apnea isn’t common in children, it does occur, especially if the child still has tonsils and adenoids.

If you have been diagnosed with mild to moderate sleep apnea you have probably been prescribed a CPAP machine. While CPAP therapy is the most common treatment for obstructive sleep apnea, it is not the most comfortable.

Why CPAP Therapy Doesn’t Always Work

CPAP therapy is used to help keep the airways open while a person is sleeping. The machine consists of a base unit that is connected to a hose. That hose is connected to a mask that you wear while you are asleep.

People who have used CPAP therapy complain that it is uncomfortable and inconvenient to travel with and while the machines have improved over time, they are still abandoned after a few months of use.

What is Oral Appliance Therapy?

Oral appliance therapy provider Dr. Jack Ringer explains that oral appliance therapy utilizes a custom-made mouth appliance that you wear while you sleep. Much like a custom made mouth guard, the appliance helps keep your airways open while you sleep. When you schedule an oral appliance therapy consultation, Dr. Ringer will choose the best appliance for your needs.
